New Year's Resolution Idea's

The start of a new year is the perfect time to evaluate your life and set goals for yourself. New Year’s Resolution Idea’s can help you make small changes that will make a difference for you and your family—past, present, and future. Not sure what you want your resolutions to be? Here are some easy, doable New Year’s resolutions ideas to get your list started.

1. Revisit childhood memories.

Nostalgia is a powerful emotion with multiple benefits. Take a trip down memory lane for a good dose of nostalgia. Even try recording some of your memories to save them for future generations or share them with your relatives.

2. Learn something new.

For example, buy Rosetta Stone for a new language.

3. Gather your family recipes.

Just preparing and eating food as a family often creates a bond. Save your favorite family recipes to remember them forever.

4. Start that thing you’ve always had on the back of your mind.

Have a book idea you have sat on for years? Always dreamed of backpacking in Europe? Find a way to set those goals in motion in small ways every day. (Write for 15 minutes a day, or save part of your paycheck, for example.)

5. Set an achievable fitness goal.

Your goal should be unique to you, whether it is eating more vegetables, going on a daily walk, drinking more water, running a 5K race, or doing something else.

6. Try a new food.

One unique way to experience new foods is to try foods from your cultural heritage.

7. Take a picture a day.

Pictures are worth a thousand words. Take a picture each day, and save the photos to preserve a year in your life. Then look through them all at the end of the year!

8. Plan a trip.

Travel can positively affect mental well-being. Heritage tourism, in particular, can help you form a connection with your cultural heritage and your ancestors.

9. Start a savings account.

Set goals to fit your budget. Any amount saved adds up over time! There are even apps that can help you start saving.

10. Share your resolutions.

Share your resolutions with someone to help stay on track. Or record your resolutions to save them as a reminder for yourself or to inspire your family.

11. Indulge in life’s little pleasures.

Allow yourself to enjoy the simple things in life. Take a bike ride; eat some ice cream; read a book.

12. Keep a gratitude journal.

There are numerous benefits to gratitude. Take five minutes every day to record what you are grateful for.

13. Write your memories.

For an easy way to start, answer one question each week. It will take only a few minutes. At the end of the year, you’ll have a treasure trove of recorded memories.

14. Build your confidence.

Practice doing little things that are hard for you, and slowly build up to bigger challenges. Talk yourself up when you are feeling nervous or less confident.

15. Start your family tree.

Family history facilitates positive self-worth. Record what you know about your family tree, and learn what you can about your ancestors.

16. Organize your documents.

An organized file of all your documents can help you keep track of your finances, save space, have peace of mind, and even preserve your family legacy.

17. Get a house plant.

Research shows that caring for house plants can reduce stress, promote healing, and improve air quality.

18. Meditate 10 minutes a day.

Meditation can be a calming and introspective influence in your life. As an added bonus, meditation can provide a needed break from screens.

19. Try a new hobby for New Year’s resolution idea’s.

Find something new that excites you, and try it. Whether it is reading, painting, woodcarving, cooking, or something else, you may find a rewarding and lifelong hobby.

20. Clean the house.

If you’re anything like half the people out there, cleaning the house or apartment doesn’t seem like such an easy task. Take it one room at a time, and declutter your life.

21. Improve your sleep.

Sleep is essential to living a happy, healthy life. Find small ways to adjust your sleep cycle, and you will be amazed at what it can do for you.

22. Try something that scares you.

Push yourself to try things that are out of your comfort zone. Ride a roller coaster, meet someone, or order something new at your favorite restaurant.

23. Donate unused items.

If you take the time to sort through your possessions, you can remove clutter from your home and provide resources to someone who could make use of them.

24. Take the stairs.

Rather than take the elevator, take the stairs! This simple choice promotes healthy living and the daily use of your body.

25. Display your family history.

Family history fosters a sense of belonging. Family photos and heirlooms on display can serve as a reminder of your family’s rich history.

26. Take designated meal breaks.

Make time to eat your meals free from distraction. Dedicated lunch breaks allow you to destress at work, and mealtimes at home will promote family togetherness.

27. Tell others that you appreciate them for New Year’s resolution idea’s.

Take the time to notice and appreciate the people in your life, and be sure to tell them! This expression of gratitude will strengthen your relationships and probably brighten their day.

28. Volunteer.

Set aside a little time once a week or once a month to give back. Deliver through Meals on Wheels, go to an animal shelter, or volunteer with schools.

29. Tour your city.

Have you ever actually seen your hometown? Go see the tourist sites, or visit a new neighborhood. You might be surprised at what you find.

30. Adopt a pet.

Cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, and fish are relatively easy and rewarding pets for first-timers, and pets have multiple benefits for your well-being. Just make sure to do your research before inviting a furry friend into your life!

31. Visit ancestral locations.

If a few generations of your family tree are full on FamilySearch.org, try using Map My Ancestors to find locations important in your family history. Find hometowns, burial sites, and more.
